$1,000 Grand Prize and Six $500 District Prizes;
Students Asked to Create PSA on Single-Stream Recycling
Bethpage, NY – In recognition of the Town of Brookhaven being the first on Long Island to implement single-stream recycling, Cablevision’s Power to Learn is sponsoring the “Let’s Think Recycling” video contest which is open to all high school students residing in the Town of Brookhaven. The contest asks high school students (who are age 14 or older at time of video entry) to create a 30-second public service announcement (PSA) showing how single-stream recycling saves time and benefits the environment. The creator of the winning video will receive $1,000 and that PSA will air on Optimum. Six runners-up, one from each council district, will each win $500. Deadline for entries is May 9; to learn more and to submit a video, visit www.powertolearn.com.
“I would like to thank Cablevision for providing this opportunity to the high school students in Brookhaven,” said Town Supervisor Ed Romaine. “This is a terrific way to heighten community awareness of the importance of recycling and the steps that Brookhaven has taken by implementing single-stream recycling to simplify the recycling process. It also engages young people in an important concept and provides them with a chance to win a cash prize.”
“Cablevision is pleased to sponsor the ‘Let’s Rethink Recycling’ video contest that provides Brookhaven high school students with an opportunity to explore and reflect on just how single-stream recycling can benefit our environment,” noted Cablevision Vice President of Public Affairs Jen Ostrager. “By being the first to implement this process, the Town of Brookhaven serves as a leader in advanced recycling on Long Island.”
Called the “Green Stream Machine,” Brookhaven’s revitalized Yaphank facility is expected to be Long Island’s largest and most advanced recycling center. The system includes the latest optical scanners and magnets, allowing materials to be sorted faster and with better efficiency. The machine processes up to 50 tons of cardboard, newspaper, aluminum, plastic and more per hour, more than three times what was previously possible. With single-stream recycling, there is no sorting – all paper, glass, plastics, cans and cardboard items go into one container.
